Happy Gut: banish IBS so you can enjoy life?
IBS is a pain in the gut and so many people suffer unnecessarily
Is this you?
I am so sorry to hear that you're struggling with IBS. It can definitely have a significant impact on your quality of life.
From my experience supporting clients with their digestive issues, there are many reasons why people experience the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Also, there are simple things that you can do to support your digestive health. Some of the symptoms my clients have experienced are:
- Abdominal pain/stomach cramps
- Diarrhoea, constipation or even both
- Bloating
- Wind
- Lack of energy
- Feeling sick
What could be affecting my gut health?
It could be a food sensitivity or a lack of digestive enzymes needed to break down your food properly, or low good gut bacteria. Some people have parasites in the gut which can leave you with similar symptoms of IBS. There is a valve between the small and large intestine called the ileo-caecal valve, which, when not working properly can cause IBS symptoms. There are so many reasons why you can experience the effects of IBS.
Here are some suggestions that may help manage you IBS symptoms:
Here are some of my go-to suggestions that can help you can gain relief:
- Try food sensitivity testing as there may well be a food you are sensitive to and this can cause your gut a lot of problems. By using Kinesiology muscle testing, foods can be tested easily. This is a wonderful and easy way to work out which foods or part of foods you are sensitive too and then to discover what you need to build a strong digestive system. By using a range of techniques, the Kinesiologist will also de-stress your digestive system giving it a chance to heal.
- Adjust your diet - eat simple and soothing foods such as non-gluten grains, fish and veg and take out any foods you believe are causing you problems. Avoid the suspect foods for 10 days see how that helps. Keep a food diary so you can keep track of how you are feeling every day and identify trigger foods that worsen your symptoms. Common triggers include spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, and high-fat foods. This can be done on your own or you could consider working with a Kinesiologist or nutritionist. registered dietitian to develop a personalised low-FODMAP diet or other dietary plan that suits your needs.
- Manage your stress - Stress can exacerbate IBS symptoms. Explore stress-reducing techniques such as meditation/mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or regular exercise. Finding activities that help you relax and unwind can make a big difference.
- Regular exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity can help regulate bowel movements and reduce stress. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
- Nutritional support: Take supplements to calm and strengthen the gut such as digestive enzymes, probiotics and L-glutamine. Digestive enzymes support the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, milk and cellulose so you can better digest the foods causing a problem. Probiotics promote good bacteria in your gut. L-glutamine is a great anti-inflammatory that supports the digestive tract
