Embrace Autumn with Renewed Health & Wellbeing

Late Summer

Kickstart your autumn with motivation and practical tips for a healthy, balanced lifestyle!

This late summer time of the year is a time of change, of transition. We are not quite in autumn and the equinox is just a week or so away. We begin to feel the chill in the air and we know that autumn is soon to be upon us making it the perfect time to reflect, renew and refocus on our health and wellbeing. The change in seasons offers us a wonderful opportunity to embrace new habits and routines that can bring balance and vitality to our lives.

Autumn is a season of transformation – nature shows us how beautiful change can be. As we watch the leaves turn and the days shorten, we can also turn a new leaf in our wellness journey. This week, I aim to inspire you with motivation and practical tips to make the most of this beautiful season.

Are you aware of what is going on in your body?

Do you listen to any of the messages your body is trying so hard to tell you?

The change in seasons is a great opportunity to nourish yourself. This autumn, let’s embrace the idea that small, consistent steps can lead to significant changes. Our health and wellbeing can flourish when we make steady, positive efforts. Remember, your journey is unique and every step you take towards wellness is a step towards a healthier, happier you.

As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure, here are 5 Health & Wellbeing Tips for Autumn:

Nourish with Seasonal Foods:

Autumn brings a bounty of nutritious and delicious seasonal produce such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, carrots, courgettes, butternut squash, potatoes, apples, pears, dates and bananas which are all alkaline based foods so great for your health and wellbeing. Incorporate these into your meals to ensure you’re fuelling your body with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Yesterday, I included some of these, I had a kale and ginger, amongst other ingredients, juice, delicious, and a tasty potato, leek, cauliflower and broccoli soup, one of our staples.     Fruit and veg

Nourishment is essential to your energy and wellbeing and your two vital organs, the stomach and spleen, that work together to digest your food and distribute the all-important energy needed throughout our body.

Did you know that our organs are connected to the seasons? In Chinese medicine the five-element chart tells us that late summer is connected to the Earth element and the stomach and spleen are connected with the Earth element and are related to digestion and, as I mentioned, the all-important energy we need throughout our body.

Boost Your Immune System:

As the weather cools, our immune systems need extra support. Increase your intake of vitamin C by eating fruits like oranges, kiwis, berries and consider adding a daily probiotic to maintain gut health. You can always opt for vitamin C in supplement form. Did you know that vitamin C is also an antioxidant that supports many important functions within our body, for example, boosting our immune system, tissue healing, the formation of collagen, the maintenance of our bones and cartilage plus it is needed for us to absorb iron. Immune Health

Keeping your immune system strong throughout the year is essential and ensuring you are eating nutrient rich foods and where needed additional supplements is great and there is always more that you can do. Exercise for example, don’t do too much hibernating during the colder months, move yourself, your body will thank you.

Stay Active Outdoors:

Take advantage of the crisp autumn air by getting outside. Whether it’s a hike or a brisk walk through the beautiful countryside, staying active outdoors boosts both physical and mental health. Daily outdoor exercise will help to keep your lungs strong too because when you are exercising, you are breathing deeper and your lungs expand to take in more oxygen. Take a brisk walk

It can be easy to be put off and lack motivation when it comes to staying active in the cooler months, getting outdoors can also help you feel more energised and motivated. A good walk can boost your mood, improve your focus and motivation. I generally have most of my best ideas when walking.

Practice Mindfulness:

Creating a good balance of activity and down time is perfect for overall wellness. Late summer into autumn is a perfect time to slow down and practice mindfulness. Spend a few minutes each day in quiet reflection, meditation, or deep breathing to reduce stress and enhance your mental clarity. You could incorporate this into your walk, whilst washing up or just sitting, there is no right or wrong way to enjoy being mindful.

Mindful walking, I love to do this. When you are walking look around you and notice what’s around you, colours, sounds, smells, feel the breeze on your skin. Your senses are really heightened and you see so much more when you are mindful. Mindfulness

Here’s a question for you, do you eat mindfully or is your plate empty before you even realise it? Try some mindful eating, pay attention to what you are eating, what it feels like and tastes like.

Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule:

Embrace the darker nights, and with the shorter days coming, it’s crucial to keep a regular sleep routine. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep each night to allow your body to rest and rejuvenate. Sleep is one of the most natural and essential things that we do, because, a good night sleep supports your bodies healing.

If you are tossing and turning and finding it difficult to relax and get into a deep sleep or if you are twitching before falling asleep then you could benefit from some B Vitamins or magnesium. For some people, the body twitching could be due to an imbalance of potassium and sodium.Beauty sleep

Did you know that lack of sleep not only leaves us feeling tired in the morning but our skin can also become tired, dull and lifeless? If we are not getting enough beauty sleep then our body, including our skin, is not having enough time to regenerate and repair. Believe it or not, sleep is the best anti-ageing treatment hence the term beauty sleep. A good night’s sleep, therefore, enables our body, including skin to renew; it enables us to heal inside and out.

As we journey through autumn, let’s be mindful of the changes around us and within us. Embrace these simple tips to help you stay healthy and balanced this season. Remember, every positive choice you make is a step toward transforming your life.
