5 Top Tips for boosting your health and wellbeing ready for winter

Balance Your Health

September is the month to reset. To reset you, your mind and your body. To set you up ready for the autumn and winter months.

This is the time for....

  • Self-care and nurturing
  • Giving your immune system a boost
  • Nurturing your nervous system
  • Mastering your mental and emotional health

We tend to dive straight into each season without giving it much thought and certainly thought about what our mind and body needs in each season. Each season is different, it comes with its own pressures and what we need therefore varies.

As we move into autumn our children return to school and bring home coughs and colds, tummy bugs and more.

The Christmas season often brings with it stress, worry, anxiety and other emotional problems. Along with this so many of us can come down with a bug or two.

Autumn and winter are such busy months with viewing new schools, exams, Halloween, bonfire night, birthdays, Christmas, New Year and other personal celebrations. In just a few months you could be celebrating, organising, planning so many different events, managing the family and even work. WOW that is such a lot.

Somewhere in amongst all this there is YOU. You are usually the person who has to cope and deliver, the one who has to stay strong, be patient and run the well-oiled machine. You are the one who is juggling the family and work. It is so easy to just carry on and forget about you and your needs. You don’t like to let people down, you don’t like to say no, you just keep going. I know I have been there.

Are you and do you struggle to keep on top of everything and find it hard to cope?

When your life gets busier are you prepared for it?

Are you managing your wellness?

Preparing for the winter months and making sure you are healthy and well, that your immune system is boosted and ready to cope, that you are managing your stress levels and that you are mastering your mindset.

Here are 5 top tips for boosting your healthy and wellbeing to help you get autumn and winter ready:

  • Make sure you get enough sleep – If you are not getting enough sleep, some say at least 7 hours, it could be connected to a poor immune system. So, sleeping well could enable you to fight illness much easier making you less resistant to the germs. For more tips on sleep take a look at this blog - Beauty Sleep
  • Keep your gut healthy – the health of your gut is so important for having a great immune system and when healthy it enables you to fight off the germs. A diet full of vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds are antioxidant rich, they are also full of vitamin C (essential for your immunity) and fibre (excellent for your gut microbiome). It is the antioxidants that help to protect you from free radicals and inflammation. A healthy gut microbiome can support a good immune system and protect us from harmful pathogens.
  • Manage your stress levels – we all live with stress these days and even when we think we are managing our stress levels we often aren’t. Long term stress contributes to inflammation and can suppress our immune system. You’ve heard this before, I'm sure, but mindfulness, meditation, yoga, gentle exercise, journaling, walking in nature among other practices can absolutely reduce stress levels. By bringing these into your daily routine will massively help reduce stress levels and protect your immune system.  For more tips on managing your stress levels take a look here - managing stress and anxiety
  • Eat a nutrient rich diet as mentioned above and if you feel you are not having enough of the essential immune boosting foods then supplement. You don’t want to over do it as that’s not good either, but the following are essential to managing your health and wellbeing especially during the winter months:
    • Vitamin C
    • Vitamin D3
    • Vitamin K
    • Vitamin A
    • Zinc
    • Selenium
    • Iron
    • Garlic
    • B Complex as this supports your stress levels emotionally and physically, among other benefits
    • Omega 3 fatty acids
    • Echinacea – only when you are feeling coldy.

Not all nutritional supplements are the same and we are not all the same so need a supplement suited to our needs as we won’t all benefit from taking the same thing. Make sure what you take is good quality. Check the labels as so many nutritional supplements are full of fillers and unnecessary ingredients that are not great.

You may not need all of these of course and you will need them in different quantities. Vitamin C for example is quickly depleted especially when we are stressed. We also need vitamin C to support the absorption of iron.

  • Take gentle exercise – If you can, walk in nature, it’s even better. Gentle exercise wont stress out your adrenals. When we are stressed, our adrenals can be compromised and more intense exercise will over stress your adrenals so keep it gentle my lovelies.

Here are some of the nutritional companies I love to use:
