7 Hay Fever Solutions
7 Hay Fever Solutions
This is a beautiful time of the year with nature bursting everywhere. New blooms and abundant trees, just gorgeous, I love it.
That said it's not always a great time for everyone and especially those of you who struggle with hay fever. If you are a sufferer, coping with itchy eyes, blocked and runny nose, sneezing, headaches, blocked sinuses, to name just a few of the symptoms, are very
annoying.
This is also a time of the year when exams are taking place and children, young people and adults can really struggle.
There is no time like the present to prepare yourself and really take a look at your health and wellbeing. To give yourself an MOT, a health makeover.
A great pace to start is with your gut and immune system. Addressing what you eat can be invaluable. Finding ways to manage stress and ensuring you have a good night's sleep is also really important as they also have an impact on your symptoms and resistance to hay fever.
It seems to me that every year there is an increasing number of people suffering from hay fever and for many people I see in my clinic, their symptoms are linked more to other environmental factors like pollution.
Here are some suggestions for you to help reduce the symptoms:
Strengthen your immune system.
This can be done by making sure you have sufficient good bacteria in the gut, taking pre/probiotics will increase the good bacteria. You can make sure you are eating nutrient-rich foods and ensure you are having sufficient Vitamin C, zinc and B6. Improving your gut health

Strengthening your gut can not only help your hay fever symptoms but your overall health and wellbeing. When we have an impaired digestive system this has a huge impact on us and our health. To me building a healthy gut is the most important to focus on, the best place to start. So what do you need to do to improve yours?
Addressing your diet goes without saying. There are probably things you eat and drink that affect you, that you are intolerant and even allergic to. If you have issues like bloating, wind, diarrhoea/constipation for example, this is your gut trying to let you know its not happy. Discovering what you are sensitive to can be a real game changer.
Again, a good probiotic will improve your good bacteria. Taking digestive enzymes is helpful for boosting the enzymes we need to break down the food we eat. They are fabulous for improving our overall gut health. Bromelain, found in pineapples is a great source and also a natural antihistamine. Discovering foods you are sensitive to and eliminating them until your digestive system strengthens will also help reduce digestive problems and in turn strengthen your immune system. If you wish to learn more about what you are intolerant to and how to improve your gut health, please contact me.
Histamine foods
Did you know that there are foods that contain high levels of histamine which can make your symptoms worse? This includes, bananas, strawberries, kiwifruit, pears, avocados, spinach, red wine, black tea, some cheeses (i.e.cheddar), some fish (i.e. tuna), yeast, peanuts and smoked meat. These are just an example of histamine loaded foods.
Low histamine foods include eggs, rice, quinoa, apples, blackcurrants, carrots, green salad. Although coffee is low in histamine it can be a real issue for some people. A number of my clients have shown to be sensitive to dairy and once removed their hay fever symptoms have greatly improved, if not gone altogether.
Problem foods
Foods such as dairy, eggs and wheat can be irritants anyway so for you might be best avoided.
Foods to support you
There are also foods that support the immune system and which are anti-inflammatory. That said, some of the foods, such as avocados can be high in histamine so please do check this out first. Also, even though they are healthy foods you could still be intolerant, so best to check this out. Food sensitivity testing can be really helpful here so you know what works for you best. Please contact me to discover more.
Fruit and veg:
Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries and blackcurrants are great because they are full of antioxidants. Onions, garlic, broccoli, mushrooms and avocado are great anti inflammatories too.
Fish oils:
Found in salmon, mackerel, sardines,
Seeds and nuts:
Walnuts, flax seeds and chia seeds. These are a fabulous source of Omega 3 and a great anti-inflammatory.
Why not give some of these a go as they can really make a difference to the effects of hay fever. Be mindful though that you could also be intolerant to certain foods which may be in the foods suggested here.
Useful nutritional supplements:
Vitamin C
Vitamin B 5 and B6
Zinc
Multivitamin and mineral
L-methionine
Calcium
Omega-3 fatty acids
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). NAC is powerful for boosting glutathione, which is the most potent antioxidant in your body. To find out more about NAC
Other factors:
What appears to be hay fever symptoms can, in fact, be due to other environmental factors like pollutants. Exhaust fumes (petrol and diesel fumes) are a particular problem making this a greater issue in towns and cities. I don't suffer from hay fever but was hugely affected by exhaust fumes for a while because I walked to work and part of my walk took me on busy main roads. Luckily as a kinesiologist, I was able to deal with the problem and have not suffered since.
